The Mediterranean fruit fly is one of the world’s most destructive fruit pests (over 250 plant species have been listed as hosts to this pest) with major economic and environmental impact in agriculture sector and for this reason is considered one of the most important agricultural pests in the world. The aim of the project is the design and development of an automated trap for population field monitoring of medfly. The new integrated automated trap system will use Wi-Fi transferring system, image analysis techniques for monitoring this fly species, a web-based software that transforms the received data into graphs and a special designed software that warns the farmers for the rate of increase of the species, in order to take timely measured for protecting their plants. With the use of this novel system, data and prompt warning can be sent at a community for spaying with pesticides at the proper time.
